AhlulBayt News Agency: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the peace agreement signed on Friday between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda in Washington, D.C., calling it a major step toward reducing tensions and promoting peace in eastern DRC and the Great Lakes region.
Guterres praised the mediation efforts of Qatar and African Union envoy, Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé, and acknowledged the support of five co-facilitators appointed by the East African Community and the Southern African Development Community.
He urged both parties to fully uphold their commitments under the peace deal and in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2773 (2025), including the cessation of hostilities and other agreed measures.
Guterres emphasized that the UN, particularly through its peacekeeping mission MONUSCO, remains fully dedicated to supporting the agreement’s implementation in close coordination with regional and international partners.
The foreign ministers of Rwanda and the DRC signed the long-awaited agreement, aiming to end decades of conflict that have plagued the region.
According to the UN, the conflict has displaced more than 7.8 million people, making it one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the world.
